Tutto Italiano 2015
It would be a falsity to pretend that I slept calmly Saturday night. With Tutto Italiano on my mind, I couldn’t wait for the morning to come. The typical sleepiness that follows late-night edits and staring at screens was nowhere to be found and I found myself planning the layout for the next day. Tutto Italiano is one of my favorite events of the year and is one of the biggest at Larz Anderson. I wanted to make the best of my time with my friends who would all be in the same location at once
The museum is about an hour's drive for me, allowing me time to go over the plan I had made so intently the night before. I arrived around 9 a.m. and made my way inside to meet with the judges. We discussed the event and how the layout of the awards would be done. I enjoy getting to know the judges and hearing their passions about the cars as well. Sharing the love of all things automotive with new people has such a high to it.
After the meeting, I met up with John Tirrell, who was unloading his 575 GTC from his trailer. What a beast! This Ferrari racecar is one of 12 built. Tom Larson brought his 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso and Arthur Gutierrez brought his 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast. What prime examples of vintage Ferraris! My favorite modern car was the orange Huracan with the sexy HRE wheels that complimented the car nicely.
My good buddy, Grant Ritchey, drove down from my hometown, Gardner, MA to enjoy the event. Being a car guy, he was enthused for today and was very patient as we made our way through people, saying hello to some old friends. Once we got through the crowd, we walked around admiring, inquiring, and photographing the Italian beauties. His favorites included the Huracan as well.
The light today was bright, which many often seek for an event. Beautiful days bring out the crowds. However, bright sun rays can disturb the photos of cars in the sense that they provide glare that reflects in the pic. To mostly everyone who sees a picture with a glare, they don’t notice it. But when I look at the photo, the glare, is well, glaring at me. Lighting is crucial for any photographer. But just any light works. Specific and intentional lighting is required to perfectly highlight the subject or car, for this matter. I prefer overcast days for easier editing processes.
While walking around, I spotted Ted Yerardi of Yerardi Transportation. Many of the cars were transferred to the museum by Ted and it was great to see him. His meticulous attention to the details of the trailering of cars is what I would want in a transporter. I have been able to travel with him for a few pickups and have been impressed by his work.
At the end of the day, I hopped into Tirrell’s 575 GTC to drive to the turnaround and back to the trailer. He punched the throttle quickly to show the raw power this car bellows out. The smile was still on my face when I returned to say goodbye to friends. Overall, the day was well spent connecting with friends both old and new, along with getting some picturesque shots of Italian cars. I felt accomplished. Keeping it to the details.
