SEMA 2024: Where Automotive Innovation Becomes Art
The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) convention is where automotive dreams come to life. It’s a world-class display of jaw-dropping builds, cutting-edge parts, and an atmosphere alive with creativity. For a photographer, it’s the ultimate playground—a place where every car tells a story, and every moment offers a chance to capture something extraordinary.
This year’s SEMA wasn’t just about the show itself—it was about the adventures and memories made along the way. Having Alexa, my fiancée, by my side made this year’s trip unforgettable. From covering clients to exploring Nevada, SEMA 2024 was one for the books.
Walking into SEMA 2024, the sensory overload hits immediately. The murmur of conversations blends with the click of camera shutters and the occasional laughter of enthusiasts marveling at the displays. The glint of polished chrome and vibrant paint jobs catches your eye at every turn. At the same time, the buzz of excitement is palpable as exhibitors unveil their latest creations, from classic restorations to cutting-edge EV builds. For a photographer, this is the ultimate playground. Every car is a story waiting to be told—a tale of hours spent in garages, midnight tinkering and pursuing perfection. Capturing those stories is where the magic happens.
SEMA is more than just a celebration of cars; it showcases artistry in all its forms. This year, I had the incredible opportunity to see some of my favorite automotive artists—Max Grundy, Lyn Hiner, and Kyle Monteiro (known on Instagram as @wrapsrwack). Each of them brings a unique style and vision to the automotive world, from Max’s retro-futuristic designs to Lyn’s expressive paintwork and Kyle’s unapologetically bold statements. Connecting with them and seeing their work up close was a highlight of the trip, reminding me how much art and passion fuel this industry.
One of the standout moments of my SEMA experience this year was a photoshoot with EXOMOD in the Nevada desert. Their candy apple red creation, draped over an all-carbon body, was pure poetry in motion. The vibrant paint gleamed against the stark, earthy tones of the desert, creating a striking contrast that made every shot pop.
While the setting was breathtaking, the desert rules reminded us of the importance of respecting the environment. We witnessed the local police rolling up to fine someone for venturing off the pavement—a stark reminder that the Red Rocks area enforces its regulations strictly. The shoot was a success, and the images turned out spectacular.
Having Alexa with me this year was a game-changer in more ways than one. Not only did her presence give me the freedom to explore without feeling tethered to endless editing sessions, but she also brought her camera and officially joined my media team. Her sharp eye and determination were invaluable, especially with the daunting task of covering every booth at the event. Together, we managed to pull it off—and it was all thanks to her incredible support and effort.
We don’t drink or gamble, so we sought out unique adventures to make the most of our time in and around Vegas. One highlight was visiting an RC plane event on the salt flats, where the serene expanse and buzzing planes made for some unforgettable shots. We also explored the iconic Hoover Dam, marveling at its scale and history, and ventured to Nelson Ghost Town.
For a photographer, Nelson is a dream come true. The abandoned, rusted vehicles and weathered structures tell stories of the past, creating scenes that are both haunting and beautiful. These side trips gave me a chance to step away from the fast-paced demands of SEMA and recharge creatively, all while enjoying the incredible landscapes of Nevada.
This year, SEMA felt different. It wasn’t just about photographing cars or chasing the perfect shot; it was about soaking in the experiences, connecting with clients, and sharing the journey with someone I love. Alexa didn’t just contribute behind the lens; she helped elevate the entire experience. With her by my side, SEMA 2024 became more than just an event—it became a shared adventure, one that wouldn’t have been the same without her.
One of my new clients, Rothspeed, left a mark at SEMA 2024 with their innovative designs. Their standout creation, the "Split Ray," reimagines the Corvette split-window with modern engineering and timeless style. At the EM-Tron booth, they also showcased the advanced EM-Tron engine management system, demonstrating their blend of cutting-edge technology and classic design. Working with Rothspeed has been a privilege, and I’m excited to capture their journey as they push the boundaries of automotive design.
As I reflect on the incredible builds, the vibrant artistry, and the endless inspiration of SEMA 2024, I’m reminded why I love what I do. Photography is more than a job; it’s a way to tell stories, preserve memories, and showcase the passion and creativity that make events like SEMA so special. Until next year, SEMA—thanks for the memories and the inspiration.
